چکیده

In this chapter we first provide a general introduction to the research area methodology and relevance, then we discuss normative reasoning for multi-agent systems, and finally we discuss current research challenges. We cover the main issues in modern deontic logic, which is much broader than the traditional modal logic framework of deontic logic, with an emphasis to our intended audience. To emphasize this broadness, we typically refer to “deontic logic and normative systems” rather than deontic logic only. 1998 ACM Subject Classification I.2.11 Distributed Artificial Intelligence

Reasoning with agent preferences in normative multi-agent systems

A fundamental feature of autonomous agents is the ability to make decisions in dynamic environments where alternative plans may be used to achieve their goals. From an individual perspective, agents can have personal preferences over some actions and they try to maximize their preference satisfaction in deciding the actions to achieve their goals. In normative multi-agent systems, however, agen...

A normative account of defeasible and probabilistic inference

In this paper, we provide more evidence for the contention that logical consequence should be understood in normative terms. Hartry Field and John MacFarlane covered the classical case. We extend their work, examining what it means for an agent to be obliged to infer a conclusion when faced with uncertain information or reasoning within a non-monotonic, defeasible, logical framework (which allo...

The Allure and Cost of Adaptive Rationality

Scientific investigation suggests that subjects are prone to commit widespread and systematic reasoning errors, since their reasoning often departs from norms of first order logic, probability theory, and expected utility theory. However, according to a recent trend in the study of human rationality, based on the concept of “adaptive rationality”, departures from those norms should not be taken...

Two adaptive logics of norm-propositions

We present two defeasible logics of norm-propositions (statements about norms) that (i) consistently allow for the possibility of normative gaps and normative conflicts, and (ii) map each premise set to a sufficiently rich consequence set. In order to meet (i), we define the logic LNP, a conflictand gap-tolerant logic of norm-propositions capable of formalizing both normative conflicts and norm...

Noisy Reasoners: Errors of Judgement in Humans and AIs

This paper examines reasoning under uncertainty in the case where the AI reasoning mechanism is itself subject to random error or noise in its own processes. The main result is a demonstration that systematic, directed biases naturally arise if there is random noise in a reasoning process that follows the normative rules of probability theory. A number of reliable errors in human reasoning unde...
